Fiona Scanlan has always loved to bake cookies, cupcakes and all kinds of sweet treats. She learned her culinary tricks from her mom, Tricia. Three years ago, she held a bake sale with some of her neighbors and friends on the sidewalk in front of St. Andrew School, tempting Cubs fans on their way to Wrigley Field and donating the proceeds to One Heart Uganda.
A year later she parlayed their initial success into a full-scale marketing and fundraising effort for OHU. Enlisting her 7th grade classmates, they created flyers, posters and custom packaging for baked goods sold in the gym to parishioners and Biddy Basketball families. The bake sale raised a whopping $1000 to help provide scholarship funds for our students in Central Uganda.
Closing out her eighth-grade year at St. Andrew, this month Fiona organized another bake sale with her 8thgrade classmates and included the 7th grade class to help create a lasting tradition. This year’s bake sale included an online campaign to capitalize on an even broader base of supporters. The proceeds topped last year’s phenomenal success and totaled $1200.
When asked what she enjoys most about the bake sales, Fiona said, “I like seeing the pictures of the kids from Uganda set out among the baked goods and knowing that all of the money raised will help them go to school.”
What a sweet lesson in the positive impact we all can have on others – thank you, Fiona!
