Catherine and Mauricia are busy putting their fashion design training to work. Catherine has her own workshop near Lwamata, where she provides tailoring services, while Mauricia works closer to Kampala. Both young women credit their graduation sewing machine gifts for helping them launch their careers.
“My machine is helping me and I’m working hard to save up to buy a serger machine which will make my work even easier,” said Mauricia. For those of you who skipped home ec, a serger uses multiple threads to sew a seam, trim excess fabric and wrap the raw edge all at once – creating a professional finish. During our recent graduation celebrations, Catherine and Mauricia proudly modeled their own fashions – a beautiful testament to their talents.
